Hydrogen Fueling Station Project

Beginning in 2020, Lewis County Transit embarked on a ten-year plan to transition to reach an entirely zero-emission fleet by 2030. Both battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell technologies were evaluated, leading to the planning of the Port of Chehalis Hydrogen Fueling Station.

The Port of Chehalis Hydrogen Fueling Station, which will provide onsite generation of green electrolytic hydrogen, will be one of the first hydrogen fueling stations in Washington State. Lewis County Transit has successfully procured equipment for the fueling station using state and local funds and estimates that the station will be fully operational by Q2 2025. The plant will use approximately 54 kW of green electrolytic power and 2.9 gallons of local city water to produce one kilogram of hydrogen, with minimal greenhouse gas emissions. It will also be part of a water reclamation process being developed at the Port of Chehalis.

The Port of Chehalis Hydrogen Fueling Station will supply hydrogen for the Lewis County Transit fleet and other local municipal fleets at an estimated rate of 750 kg per day. The remaining 1,250 kg will be available for purchase by off-takers, primarily public fleets in Lewis County and surrounding regions that do not produce their own hydrogen but require fuel to support their fleets. The fueling station will be able to dispense at a rate of 700 bar for light-duty vehicles and 350 bar for heavy-duty vehicles. The site will feature three light-duty Level 3 DC fast-charging EV stations with ADA-compliant parking stalls.
